French Toasted Cheese Sandwich (a/k/a Monte Cristo)

What to do with Thanksgiving leftovers is a generations-old dilemma. Creating a Monte Cristo sandwich is a tasty solution.

Combining the fried sweetness of French toast and the meatiness of a croque-monsieur (grilled ham and cheese), the Monte Cristo probably has a French history. But that’s OK. It’s a great way to clear some space in the fridge.

Here’s how to make a Monte Cristo sandwich:

Ingredients
white bread
mayonnaise
mustard
couple slices of ham
couple slices of turkey
slice of cheese (Swiss is traditional)
1 egg
½ cup milk
salt
pepper
a little oil for frying
powdered sugar

Directions
In a shallow bowl, beat the egg and stir in the milk, salt and pepper. Set aside.

Heat a greased skillet over medium heat.

Spread some mayo and mustard on a slice of bread. Then layer the ham, cheese and turkey on top. Use another piece of bread to create the sandwich. Slice the sandwich into halves or quarters.

Dip the sandwich in the egg mixture. Brown the sandwich on both sides. Sprinkle with powdered sugar just before serving.
